SALVADOR & BLACK HISTORY
Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, was founded in 1549 and served as Brazil's capital until the mid-18th century. With a population of 1,500,000, it is the fifth largest city in Brazil. It is thanks to them that the local folklore developed, based on the African culture of the Black slaves. Salvador offers a combination of simplicity, poverty and mysticism, combined with Western sophistication. The city's location on the edge of Baia de Todos os Santos (the Bay of Saints) and its famous beaches have been an inspiration for writers and musicians. The city's many churches reflect the development of a special Christian sect which combines the beliefs and customs of the Africans with those of the Portuguese.
